What is a DLC and what are its characteristics?

 

A Digital Learning Community is virtual neighborhood that connects real people with shared interests and goals to learn with the aid of technology. It is a platform for its community members to share resources and experiences. The community is open and welcoming to new and veteran members who contribute to the overall well-being of the DLC and respect and abide by its membership rules.

 

What features of the DLC would set it apart from and above others? 

 Its utility to its community members.

A DLC is only as good as the quality information and usefulness it provides to its members. Content is king. In an academic DLC like that of Georgia Virtual Learning, a content management system that is easy to navigate and supported by a reliable server are keys to students and faculty maximizing their participation in the DLC.

 

What qualities would potential citizens of such an enlightened online society need to possess in order to gain admittance?

 An enlightened online society tends to attract potential citizens who are passionate about a shared topic or discipline. Members should be open to growth in the topic area and share their previous knowledge with humility. Tone and the subtleties of language are key in a DLC where a facial gesture is not available to indicate that one was joking, so the use of emoticons is helpful in smoothing potentially ruffled feathers. A DLC's spoken or unspoken rules of engagement must be respected and adhered to for the health and benefit of the group.
