Navigate 2.1.3. Commercial versus Open Virtual Classrooms
The decision to run a virtual classroom with commercial software or open source software depends on many factors such as an organization's size & budget, number of users to be serviced & their geographical locations' access to broadband width, anticipated product customer support and numerous other aspects.
Some pros and cons of commercial software and open source software are listed below:
Commercial - pros
*more reliable
*offers customer support
*better security features
Commercial -cons
*can be costly
*requires greater download space to run
*operates differently on various operating systems affecting user functionality
versus
Open Source - pros
*free or low cost
*frequently hosted in cloud or requires minimum memory space to run
*design is typically responsive to users' needs, with paid "upgrades" available
Open Source - cons
*no guarantee of life of service
*customer support is frequently in form of forum of community users
*limited security
As a teacher for GVL, I will need to make software selections that benefit the learning experience of all my students.
