Navigate 1.3.1 Discussing the LMS and CMS

What are the differences between LMS and CMS?

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a Content Management System (CMS) "plus."

A CMS is narrow in scope in that it focuses on the management and distribution of online learning content and instructor-led courses. It is a secure database where learners can access course content.

A LMS offers the functionality of a CMS plus learner social interaction via collaborative tools and  learning metrics like individual performance tracking and other reporting functions. A LMS is scalable, incorporates learning features outside of the computer classroom environment and is more robust than a CMS.

When would one need a full blown LMS?

If an organization anticipates growth and greater functionality needs for its CMS, then it might be better served using a LMS which could grow and expand with the organization unlike a mere CMS.
