Communicate 4.1.2 Rubrics

Rubrics state a task's varied levels of production and the resulting scores. It clearly identifies the performance expectations while breaking the task into manageable chunks. Overall weights of the various parts are expressed in the rubric so students have a guide as to "how" to utilize their time in order to maximize their efforts.

The communicative skill of speaking can sometimes be tricky for which to create activities and to assess student performance. The American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) is the standard bearer for World Language Learning in the United States and is highly regarded abroad. ACTFL's rubrics are aligned with Common Core and other state standards.

Here is a interpersonal speaking rubric for a level 1 Spanish  oral activity.

The rubric is clear, only measuring 4 speaking objectives. Each objective is assessed on a 5-tier scale that measures an End of Course (EOC) exam, a formal assessment. Scoring of the rubric is simple and not time-consuming. Additionally, the student will now how she ranks on the ACTFL interpersonal speaking scale for her level of Spanish (compared to other students using this same model). This feedback is individualized and objective.
