Participate 4.1.3 Digital Health

Work-Life Balance challenges everyone. Lines between work hours and personal hours are blurred as social networking channels increase and the response time expectation decreases.

What is the most proactive means of ensuring the most balanced blend of technology and well-being?

A weekly calendar that includes a blend of "must-do's" and some "want-to's" to keep you happy, healthy and productive.

Dr. Mercola (www.mercola.com) says, "The average American office worker can sit for 13 to 15 hours a day...inappropriate amounts of sitting is huge, and accounts for negative changes at the molecular level."

He recommends the following health tips:
1)Stand up at regular intervals
2)Get moving
3)Monitor your screen height
4)Imagine your head as a bowling ball and properly align it with neck and spine
5)Use a timer or an online timer to schedule break times in your work day

What can students and teachers do to make sure they get the most from technology while simultaneously safeguarding good health?

As teachers we naturally encourage our students to be well-rounded and to pursue/develop passions while managing their school workloads. Time for friends, family and self is critical. This "balance" in the virtual instructional world should be no different. The use of calendars and a class routine are tools to help students find their personal school-life balance.
